Arrow mazes
The first 5 pages of the Original Arrow Maze book are below. The Book has since been replaced with a revised and expanded (100 arrow mazes!) book on Amazon !
How do you solve an Arrow Maze ?
Start in the yellow block and move in any direction you want.
Whatever arrow you land on, you must follow that direction and move to the block it takes you to.
When you land on an arrow with 2 possible directions you have a decision to make, just like at an intersection in a regular maze
If you are interested in making your own Arrow Mazes check out this How To Make an Arrow Maze instruction post which includes a video.
I am also experimenting with new constructions of Arrow Mazes.
And if you have a lot of time try to solve THE LARGEST ARROW MAZE IN THE WORLD!
ARROW MAZE INNOVATIONS
The evolution of the Arrow Maze from how I started making them above led to the improvements below. Check out the rule page below made for my Arrow Maze Book. I have added an All Ways Arrow which seems great until you realize 8 choices is actually NOT your friend. The Double Move Arrow gets you into and out of corners more easily but makes it harder to look forward a few moves to solve. Landing on the Return to Start block is terrible but at least it isn’t Jail like Monopoly. START / GOAL seems simple until you realize you are going in the wrong direction, maybe, or maybe not. Slide Arrows give you so many possibilities. And finally Warp Grids allow you to jump around the maze (or not).
Here are 3 new versions of Arrow Mazes that show how it has evolved for my book. The first “bug-looking” arrow maze has more decisions than normal and switches to a traditional START and GOAL from the color format. It is also tilted at 45 degrees and has a shadow to give it more visual interest (and I think it makes the maze easier to see).
The second Arrow maze is one I refer to as a kitchen sink arrow maze. It contains START / GOAL grids, Warp grids and Double Move Arrows. These new movements make for a more complicated and fun maze solving experience ! Go ahead and give it a try…
And my last new example shows you the RETURN TO START grid and the All Ways Arrow. Plus you have the double moves and warps.
And things can get very fun with all the new possible moves. Here is another excerpt from an upcoming book. This one is a double move extravaganza. I didn’t remember how I made this and just did a quick solve before I posted this…and IT WAS NOT QUICK AT ALL. If you use your entire toolkit, or in this case just one move in a hyper active way, you can make some really challenging and fun arrow mazes !
Summary
Arrow mazes are a new take on mazes. They are a fun mazes for all ages. Pathway directions are determined by the direction the arrow points to with decisions at the maze start and periodically through the maze. The goal is the same as in a regular drawn maze, move through the pathways from the Start to the Goal. Fun to play and solve !
