So the storytelling in this movie revolves around a woman who as the result of an accident has amnesia. The amnesia also seems to shake loose some early memories of trauma she had as a young girl. Combine a slow recovery with moving to the country to the house you grew up in and it, well, hinders the recovery. As our main character remembers her past (and the secrets it holds) we get a tense, dark movie. Oh, and it takes place near a farm with a maze made of haybales (thought it was going to be corn, didn’t you !). Overall the story is ok. The acting is ok. It’s just ok all the way around.

I give it a 5/10.

Frankenstein's Army (2013) Movie Review

This movie has a pretty cool concept. What if Doctor Frankenstein was working for the Nazis and was in charge of experiments to make super soldiers (or maybe just a mad scientist using his writings for inspiration). A group of Russian soldiers goes on a mission to track down a secret lab and stop them. When they reach the underground secret lab ( to someone unfamiliar it feels like a maze) they are met with some really inventive creatures. Like, hey let’s replace an arm with a weapon type stuff. It is a sci-fi horror concept film that is not serious at all. I would classify it as mindless entertainment (and you see plenty of brains throughout!).

Unfortunately, once you see the monsters there’s not much left to keep watching for.

I give it a 5/10.

In Fear (2013) Movie Review

When I sat down to watch this movie I knew it was a horror movie but I had no idea it would become a maze movie. The movie takes place in the UK and follows a new couple (2 weeks) on a trip together. They decide to go to a country hotel on their way to meet friends. And they get lost. And remain lost. And our character says these roadways are like a maze. And they are right. This movie reminds me of Vivarium but taking place in a car in the UK. Overall this simple low budget movie works. It has tension at times and is worth watching. Yes, it isn’t perfect, and despite the short length could have been cut by about 10 minutes.

I give it a 5.4/10.

Woman in the Maze (2023) Movie Review

Woman in the Maze (2023) IMDB AMZN

A woman works for a real estate company and takes a business trip to check out some locations in Jerome, Arizona. Jerome just happens to be America’s biggest ghost town. And the enormous old house she rented is haunted. That is the set-up for the movie. We also learn at some point that the house doesn’t want to let her leave, well except for the first few times she enters the house - then it seems to be perfectly fine. Why did the haunted house change it’s mind ? I have no idea. Did I consider going back to rewatch part of the movie to see if I missed something ? No. Do you go to the dentist for fun ? The only thing holding this movie back from awards is bad acting, a weak script with holes, a lack of scary scenes (there are some nice scary mirror scenes), and a bad ending. The poster is cool. So there’s that.

So, the house, when it finally traps our main character inside turns into a maze. Sadly, that just isn’t enough to save this movie. If you want to check out similar the house is a maze movies I suggest The Night House, Relic, Thir13een Ghosts, You Should Have Left or Grave Encounters if your prefer an asylum to a house.

I give it a 4.3/10.
