Maze of the Week #80 - Guangdong Museum Maze

Maze of the Week #80 is my first maze of a building in China, the Guangdong Museum (广东省博物馆) located in Guangdong, China. What drew me to this building is the coloration of the great architecture, with red accent coloring where the window is inset against the dark grey building facing. You can learn about the museum here or plan your visit with this travel site or on the official museum site.

YouTube: A short video showing the outside and inside of the museum !

Photo: I like this nightime photo of the museum from user deson.wu from flickr.

The Maze: Full color so I could feature the red accents (and burgundy in the shadows). Maze start and goals are in the corners.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) Movie Review

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) IMDB AMZN

Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves movie poster

Before I review this movie I want to put it in a larger context, and that is with a maze movie that has been re-made. Cube (1997) is an original horror sci-fi classic that takes place in a large mazelike cube. Cube (2023) is the Japanese remake with essentially the same plot but a major difference in IMDB rating, 4.5 vs. 7.1. Because the original found success late and not in theaters the Japanese version did more than 4X the box office !?! Dungeons and Dragons was a 2000 movie with a horrible 3.6 rating and this is the new version of it (not really a remake). So how is it?

Well it feels like a good Marvel movie to me. A fantasy adventure quest with witty banter and over the top characters. You get action and laughs all around a fun story in an interesting fantasy world. I enjoyed it. Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez do a nice job taking on the bad guy played by Hugh Grant, and they do it surrounded by a cast of interesting characters. During the last section of the movie the team enters an arena where teams attempt to solve a giant maze that includes treasure, traps and monsters. And of course sometimes the walls move !

I give it a 7.3/10.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) Movie Review

I was sitting back watching this movie when out of nowhere I hear the word labyrinth and need to go back and re-watch a portion of the movie. In Shazam’s world there are doors to different realms. One of the characters comes out of one and they mention that that door is just a labyrinth.

As far as the movie, this sequel is lacking some of the fun of the first movie. There are a few laughs and a few nice scenes but overall it is a bit bland. While I enjoyed the performances from Helen Mirren and Lucy Lui - is anyone scared of them as the opponents in a superhero film ? Overall, eh.

Maze movie ? Not really. Worth seeing - only if you like DC comics/films.

I give it a 5.8/10.

Maze of the Week #79 - Severance Hall Maze

Maze of the Week #79 takes us back to Cleveland, Ohio one of the cities I have lived in and so a common place for my subject matter to come from. This particular maze is of Severance Hall, the home of the excellent Cleveland Orchestra. Opened in 1931 it is considered one of the most beautiful music venues in the world (see the YouTube tour below) ! If you are in the area check it out along with the Cleveland Museum of Art next door. The Wade Park District of Cleveland is a must see. You can find information about the orchestra here or more about the building here.

YouTube: Form the orchestra’s official channel !

And to get the details right I took some of my own photos of the building that you can find (hopefully!) in the maze I made. Here is a gallery of 6 of them:

The Maze: This maze was started by me a few years ago (Fall 2019) and abandoned. When I first did it I tried to make it without any perspective (so the maze would be boxy and have lots of 90 degree corners) but decided I liked more realistic looking mazes and so I started making everything with perspective. That put this maze on the shelf until one day I found it and decided to finish it (and also color it). You can still see how ‘boxy’ it is. but I still think it came out pretty good ! I like the detail on the facade despite not being important to the maze.
