The 7 Maze and Labyrinth Movies That Kids Will Love

Maze and Labyrinth movies are probably more popular than you realize. I have reviewed over 120 different movies on the site, and the Top 12 Maze Movies list includes some all-time classics. Some movies have a quick maze or labyrinth scene, while others are based completely on the maze theme. For a sortable spreadsheet of all maze movies I have reviewed use this link to the google sheet. A common theme is a horror movie where a character gets lost in a corn maze or a funhouse mirror maze. But none of those themes or situations are appropriate for kids. Today I fix that.

The 7 Maze and Labyrinth Movies That Kids Will Love

7. ALICE IN WONDERLAND (1951) IMDB Rated : G Time: 71 minutes

Alice in Wonderland (1951) movie poster

Our first movie is the classic Disney animated version of Alice in Wonderland from 1951 (I count 14 different versions of this movie that have been made!). Rated G and comes in at a quick 71 minutes, the shortest movie on the list. Towards the end of the movie we get a scene where Alice is led into a maze by the Cheshire cat.

6. THE GAMES MAKER (2014) IMDB Rated: TV - PG Time: 111 minutes

The Games Maker movie poster

This is the longest movie on the list and the movie most appropriate for older kids. Not quite PG-13 but the material would be appreciated more. Essentially this story revolves around the making of board games and a family adventure that takes our young lead actor on a quest ! We get a hedge maze and a board game involving labyrinths. If you like teen adventure movies, this one might interest you !

5. ANINA (2013) IMDB Rated: NR Time: 78 minutes

Anina movie poster

This movie is about a 10 year old girl, Anina, and a problem she deals with at school. She receives an interesting punishment and the story revolves around how she deals with it. It has a great message and includes multiple mazes in the story. This was the submission of Uruguay for the 2014 Oscars best foreign language film category. It deserves more love. The animation style is beautiful.

4. MUPPETS FROM SPACE (1999) IMDB Rated G Time: 87 minutes

Muppets From Space movie poster

While this isn’t much of a maze movie, there is a maze scene featuring Rizzo the Rat. Now during a key scene Rizzo gets captured by the bad guys and gets put into a cage with lab rats. I should have said “spoiler” before that. Anyway the lab rats are put into a rat maze during the next scene., and that’s why this movie is a maze movie. Overall we have a typical Muppets movie that is led by Gonzo. It’s rated G and comes in at a short 87 minutes.

3. FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON (2000) IMDB Rated TV - PG Time: 91 minutes

Flowers for Algernon movie poster

Any movie that starts with a mouse running through a maze is going to get a good review from me. The movie is of the made for TV variety and is based on the best-selling, award winning 1966 novel of the same name written by Daniel Keyes. The story revolves around an intellectually disabled man who undergoes a surgery to try to make him a genius. There is an opportunity for some parenting with this movie by discussing how people treat our main character during the film.

2.HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (2010) IMDB Rated PG Time: 98 minutes

How to Train Your Dragon movie poster

The original How to Train Your Dragon movie contains a maze scene during…..you guessed it…..the training of dragons. This movie started a successful franchise and is a movie that can enjoyed by both children and adults.

Movies that didn’t make the cut. All have maze scenes, and are PG-13 if you have older children who can sit through longer movies.

  • Hubie Halloween ; PG-13, 103 minutes

  • The Maze Runner ; PG-13, 113 minutes

  • The Maze Runner: The Death Cure ; PG-13, 143 minutes

  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ; PG-13, 157 minutes

If you would like to see all maze movies in a sortable Google sheet, I have made one (with 11 different columns) to help people find movies to watch !

  1. LABYRINTH (1986) (IMDB) Rated PG Time: 101 minutes

Labyrinth (1986) movie poster

Another movie featuring the talents of Jim Henson but with the additions of David Bowie and Lucasfilm. A teenage girl is angrily babysitting her younger baby brother and she wishes he would be taken away. The Goblin King grants the wish and takes the brother in a classic case of be careful what you wish for. Her only way to get him back is to solve a Labyrinth in 13 hours or her brother will permanently become a goblin in this weird fantasy world. Some children may find this scary…so use your best judgement ! I love the cast of characters from Jim Henson which later became a series of comic books !

The 10 Best Maze Themed Movie Posters

I review any movie that features a maze or labyrinth. So far that means over 80 reviews and includes some all time great movies. If you are wondering what the best of these movies are, check out this post detailing the top 12 maze movies of all time. I think you will pleasantly surprised just how great and iconic some of these movie are ! Can you guess the #1 movie ?

In this post, I keep with the maze movie theme but pay tribute to the movie posters that promote movies. The best maze and labyrinth movies don’t always have the best ‘maze’ graphics on their posters. In fact, some very average movies have really cool posters with mazes in them. When researching this post I came across a rabbit hole website. That is a website so cool that you can’t stop spending time on it and suddenly 5 minutes becomes an hour. Fair warning. The website is dedicated to movie posters, and it allows you to search for any movie any find it’s poster variations. It is called Impawards. Click later…you might not come back.

I used the site after finding multiple variations of posters for the 2019 movie Into the Labyrinth. My initial poster did not have any maze designs so I was naturally interested in the variations that did feature a maze. Anyway, that became a rabbit hole when I started to search some of the other 50+ maze movies I have reviewed.

Let’s get to the artwork. I narrowed down the top 10 from a first pass group of 21 posters that caught my eye. Some movies have multiple posters on the list, and every single poster contains either a maze or a labyrinth. I hope you enjoy this. Click on any title to read my review of the movie and watch it’s trailer.

The 10 Best Maze Themed Movie Posters

#10 READY PLAYER ONE (2018) (IMDB) (PRIME VIDEO)

Wait, didn’t you just say each poster would contain either a maze or a labyrinth ? I did. It does. What makes this poster great is the fact that it looks like a pretty typical adventure/science fiction movie poster, but it has a hidden maze. Do you see it ?

Ready Player One movie poster

How about I show you an alternative poster that shows it more clearly:

Ready Player One logo movie poster

That’s right, the start of the maze is on the left side of R in Ready, with the goal the egg located in the middle of the O in One. Easy to miss. And yes, this is a solvable maze !

#9 ANDRON (2015) (IMDB) (AMAZON)

This is a terrible movie. Yes, it has a name you know, Alec Baldwin. Yes, the poster and movie have a labyrinth/maze theme. The idea is strong and interesting, but the execution was just not there, except for the poster ! Very Sci-fi looking with a group of people heading towards the center of what looks like an icy labyrinth. We have an intriguing tagline - “Only One Survives”. An alternative version of the poster replaces the spaceship with pictures of the cast, including Baldwin, but this version is the stronger of the two.

#8 INTO THE LABYRINTH (2020) (IMDB) (AMAZON)

The film that inspired this blog post makes it’s debut on the list with this character focused poster. The story takes place in 2 locations and these are our 2 leading roles in those locations. Obviously, you probably know Dustin Hoffman the star for promoting this film. The poster features a circular maze in the background with 2 other characters from the movie. No that is not Donnie Darko, but yes it is a large rabbit.

Into the Labyrinth movie poster

#7 MAZE RUNNER THE DEATH CURE (2018) (IMDB) (PRIME)

It will not surprise you that The Maze Runner movies would be part of this list. Here is the first entry. An action poster featuring our characters running from the baddies with maze imagery on the side of the paths. I also like the tagline “Every Maze Has An End”.

Maze Runner the Death Cure movie poster

#6 INTO THE LABYRINTH (2020) (IMDB) (AMAZON)

Our first double entry (but not our last). This is my preferred version of this movies movie poster. It focuses on one half of the story and has a slightly larger maze features in the background. It looks more ominous and makes me want to see the movie !

Into the Labyrinth movie poster

#5 LABYRINTH (1986) (IMDB) (PRIME VIDEO)

Of all the movies on the list this was the most difficult to choose the best poster from. I had 4 different versions that I liked, including a cool Japanese one. In the end I didn’t pick the most iconic one you are most familiar with. Instead I picked this version featuring the castle in the center of a green maze that looks somewhat like a hedge maze.

Labyrinth movie poster characters version

The 3 additional posters are all honorable mention for this list, so let’s go ahead and look at them now. The first is the most iconic, featuring David Bowie as the Goblin King and a maze for the background. The second is a Spanish language version of the poster featuring the characters around the center scene. There is a small maze leading to the castle at the top of this poster also. And in the Japanese version we get a completely different look (that almost does not fit the movie IMO with the red/pink coloring) with a large white maze covering the top of the poster.

#4 THE MAZE RUNNER (2014) (IMDB) (PRIME VIDEO)

This is the version of the poster that I have seen most often. A group of individuals running in between moss covered walls in a giant maze.

The Maze Runner movie poster

#3 OXYGEN (2021) (IMDB)

We have a Netflix exclusive movie on the list ! Welcome. It is a French science fiction film and this is the French version of the poster. It also feels like the most modern looking of the posters we have looked at so far. The maze superimposed (or reflected ?) on the eye works really well. A great design.

#2 MAZE RUNNER THE DEATH CURE (2018) (IMDB) (PRIME)

Welcome back Death Cure. This poster version features our characters hovering over their challenge. A huge maze surrounding a central city. This gives new meaning to the term fortification. We get the tagline “Every Maze Has An End” again.

Maze Runner the Death Cure movie poster

Before we get to my pick of the best movie maze poster let’s look at a few more that didn’t quite make the cut. The Exit Strategy poster features a maze as it’s background; Hell Fest has a barbed wire circular maze behind the devil; Maze features a maze background; Prisoners has many poster variations that feature mazes and some versions which feature a circular maze in the “o” of the title; The Man in the Maze has a maze background and a Man in the Maze labyrinth featured in the title; and the final example is a 3rd poster from Into the Labyrinth with a great circular maze background that didn’t make the cut only because it has no title/details like a normal movie poster. And we also have one more poster from Maze Runner: The Death Cure which features the cast in front of a maze. Click to scroll through each poster.

And now our #1 poster !

#1 THE MAZE RUNNER (2014) (IMDB) (PRIME VIDEO)

I want no part of this maze. This is my favorite poster because when I look at it and see the enormous maze in front of them that is what I think. Challenge NOT accepted. The way the maze expands out in all directions and into the horizon seems ominous.

Maze of the Week #23 - Wrigley Field Sign Maze

Many of the mazes I have featured this year have showcased signs and buildings that most people probably weren’t that familiar with. But this week, for my 23rd maze I am featuring a maze of the iconic Wrigley Field Sign. The maze is a standard construction and was done in full color. There is only 1 version.

Some information about Wrigley Field

It is not surprising that Wrigley Field is a US National Historic Landmark, but it is surprising that it was only added in September of 2020. Since opening in 1914 it has primarily been the home of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, however it has housed 3 different NFL teams since it’s opening…the Bears…and well you’ll need to guess the other 2 ! Here is a video with a quick view of the sign:

The maze:

I hope you enjoy the maze. Free Wrigley Field Sign Maze download is available on it’s long term webpage.

Flowers for Algernon (2000) Movie Review

Flowers for Algernon (2000) IMDB Prime

Flowers for Algernon movie poster

Any movie that starts with a mouse running through a maze is going to get a good review from me. The movie is of the made for TV variety and is based on the best-selling, award winning 1966 novel of the same name written by Daniel Keyes. This is the second movie made about the book, with the first being Charly in 1968.

The story revolves around an intellectually disabled man who undergoes a surgery to try to make him a genius. Along the journey we see how people interact with our main character Charlie Gordon based on his mental capacity, and Charlie deals with everyone else as his intelligence changes and he understands his past more clearly. Matthew Modine does a nice job in his role as the main character and the supporting characters are good also.. Overall, while this does not have (nor need) a big budget to be successful, the movie is well made.

This is a good family movie and I suggest every teen read the book.

The movie has many maze scenes which is always a good thing for me ! I give it a 6.8/10.

Check out the trailer below which features Algernon in the maze !
